Timberwolf dog food voluntary recall

I have been feeding both of my dogs Timberwolf. Different brands than the ones listed below. Both were doing fine until I bought these last two bags of food. Nop was eating the Southwest Chicken and Herbs and Keeper was eating the Wild and Natural Grain free formula. Nop who has NEVER not eaten whatever was put down in front of him started becoming finicky. He'd always dive into his food with both front feet but instead he was dis-interested in the food. So, I switched him to Keepers and his appetite came back to normal. Needless to say his dog food ended up in the garbage. If I would have kept the bag it came in then I could have taken it back to Western Pet Supply and they would have refunded my money. They're good about that.

Below is what Timberwolf had to say about their recall. I have filled out a complaint form about the Southwest Chicken and Herbs food and sent them it.

Dakota Bison/Ocean Blue Reported Issues
June 3rd, 2008

Timberwolf Organics Customer,

Due to recent reports from some customers, we have ordered that two formulas from three specific dates be pulled from the shelves. These are:

Dakota Bison with 'best by date' of 12 Feb 2009
Ocean Blue with 'best by date' of 20 Feb 2009
Ocean Blue with best by date' of 8 March 2009

The reported symptoms include dogs refusing to eat, diarrhea or vomiting. While the problem is inconsistent (not every dog eating food from those dates/bag show the symptoms and not every bag), to err on the side of caution have decided to pull the formulas produced with the above dates. Initial testing has come back negative for problems and further testing is pending results.

As soon as the cause of this reported problem is determined procedures will be put into place to ensure that an event like this cannot happen again. Please be assured that no other formulas and Ocean Blue and Dakota Bison with dates other than ones listed above are not affected.

We apologize for any inconvenience or problems that this may have resulted in. If you do have a bag with those dates please contact the retailer you purchased it from for an exchange or credit. If you purchased it directly from us please give us a call or email us at customer.support@timberwolforganics.com, or you can download the Customer Complaint Form below and fax it to 866.796.8814.

Thank you for choosing Timberwolf Organics.

Sincerely,

Timberwolf Organics Team

I know how you feel. I'd found something that Keeper seemed to be doing good on and then this. So, I've now switched both of them to Wellness CORE. Lower protein and fat and they have three varieties of grain free....CORE Original w/turkey and chicken, CORE Ocean Formula w/whitefish and salmon and then CORE Reduced Fat Formula w/Turkey, whitefish, and salmon.

The dogs seemed to like it. I'm mixing about 75%/25% right now.

The whole dog food thing is sort of freaking me out. It should not be this hard to find good consistent quality food for our dogs.

I filed a complaint about Southwest Chicken as well. One of my dogs refused to eaet, the other was just eating much slower than usual and wasn't excited about the food. First I was worried about the one that wasn't eating, now I am worried about the one that did! They said they haven't received complaints on this formula. Obviously, a lie. I just switched to Fromm grain free food. My dogs are happy again!!!

I'm feeding Wellness CORE and both dogs love it.

Who are you??? You didn't sign your LJ post.

I didn't mean to be anonymous, I just don't have an ID. I was doing a search to see if anyone else was having problems with the Southwest Chicken Timberowlf and found your page. My dogs (a brittany-beagle mix and a jack russell-chihuahua mix) love their new food. After all, it has real WI cheddar cheese, so how can you go wrong? :) I think Wellness CORE has a higher protein content than I was looking for if I remember correctly.

No problem. I never did hear back from Timberwolf. Both of my dogs seem to be doing great on Wellness CORE and since they are both BC's and pretty active the higher protein is not an issue.
